New India, a Bangalore-based NGO has offered financial help to Asifa’s family to support them with legal/ other expenses post the horrific event. The NGO has contributed a sum of
Rs. 5 lakhs to Mohammad Yousaf, the father of the 8-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Rasana Village, Kathua in Kashmir.

A New India team member Manjinder Singh Kalsi (Bobby) met with Mohammad Yousaf on the 17th of April at Jammu, after a two-day journey to hand over the cheque.

After it was discovered that Asifa’s family did not have a bank account, Bobby coordinated with the local branch of a reputed bank and helped the family open an account where the cheque would be deposited. In this regard, he also met with the victim family’s lawyer Deepika Singh who shared information that she had filed a petition in the Supreme Court to shift the case from Jammu to Chandigarh to ensure an impartial inquiry in the case. Police protection has been provided to the family of Asifa.

New India is committed to offering all possible assistance to Asifa’s family to ensure justice is delivered in an incident that has numbed the nation, denting its collective consciousness.

Promoted by two socially conscious entrepreneurs Vijay Tata and Amrita Tata, New India is a self-funded NGO offering financial support to rape victims towards legal and other expenses. The initiative also works to create public opinion to influence the Government’s attention towards setting up of the judicial infrastructure required for speedy disposal of rape cases in India.
